Teaching a Game Engine

Before our team came together, only Scott and I (Stephy) knew how use the engine we chose for the contest – and in general. For the IGMC contest two of our members had touched the engine before, but still weren’t very skilled with it.

After the event was over, we decided that in order to become a more efficient team, everyone should learn about the engine. Luckily, RPG Maker is easier to get used to than its competitors.

The set-up was simple: our TV was the desktop monitor and the 3 of them sat on the couch with 3 of our laptops installed with RPG Maker XP.

The first lesson plan was about mapping. I showed up a few basics on the desktop, and gave them about 30 minutes to make their first interior map using the tiles I supplied them. They then handed their maps back to me and we went over how they did.

Why don’t you see their progress for 15 minutes?

It seems we have a ways to go still. To be fair, the first two had messed up and didn’t have time to add furniture.

Next lesson: fix the maps based on what was learned!

Now that the contest is over, though you can still download and vote for our game here, we will begin working on our main project. Don’t worry, though, it takes place in the same world as INQUISITOR.
